Strategies and Best Practices for Teaching Vocabulary
It is important to include vocabulary instruction, and this can be done using the three tiers. The tiers help categorize the vocabulary words. The tiers help with choosing the correct words for your student to study. The Three Tiers 1. Basic or Common Words
2. Academic or High Frequency Word This is the most important tier because it is used the most!
3. Low Frequency or specialized words

Implementing Vocabulary Into the Classroom

Before Reading- Vocabulary
1. Introduce the Word
As a teacher, write the word on the board or big enough for the students to see, read the word, and have students repeat the word. If it is a difficult word, have the students repeat the word multiple times.
2. Introduce the Meaning of the Word
Present a student- friendly explanation or definition for your class.
3. Illustrate the word with examples
This can be done in three different ways, concrete, visual, and verbal. A picture presented to students is highly recommended!
4. Check Students' Understanding
Ask your students deep processing questions!

On their website, click the link below, they "consider excellent models for teaching vocabulary, explaining idioms, fostering word consciousness, instruction for English Language Learners, and mnemonic strategies!
National Reading Panel on Vocabulary
- This link will take you to a site that shows findings and determinations from the National Reading Panel. It goes through all the parts of Language Arts instruction, but for this link, we are focusing mainly on Vocabulary Instruction. " The studies reviewed suggest that vocabulary instructions does lead to gains in comprehension, but the methods must be appropriate to the age and ability of the reader" (National Panel).
